Haridwar means Gateway to God, Hari means God and
dwar means gateway. Haridwar stands around the place where the place where
the river Ganga emerges from the Shivalik range of hills.
Haridwar is essentially
a Hindu pilgrim town with temples and hermitages along the banks of the Ganga.
There are numerous legends associated with its founding which are as colorful as
the mythology that infuses the Hindu religion.
In the evenings, the Aarti (the
ritual of worship) at this Ghat is an elevating experience. People light Diyas (earthern
lamps) and float them on the river, each Diya carrying a fond wish. The
twinkling earthen lamps make a beautiful sight in that environment of temple
bells and religious music that wafts through the air around the Ghats.
