Jodhpur is a city built at the foot of the hill amidst the Thar desert. The
region is known as the Land of the Sand. The city is protected by a fortified
high wall which is nearly 10 km in length and has eight gates facing different
directions.
The fortified city, standing sentinel to the
great splendour and romance of Thar desert, transports the visitor to the
imperial times. Once the capital city of Marwar State, it was founded in 1459
A.D. by Rao Jodhaji the chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs who claimed to
be descendents of Lord Rama the epic hero of Ramayana.

On arrival, check-in to your choice of hotel. Half day tour of Mehrangarh Fort – is one of the largest fort in India. . It is situated on a 150m high hill. Rao Jodha, the then chief of Rathore clan, constructed it in 1459 .This Fort is one of the best with its exquisitely latticed windows, carved panels, elaborately adorned windows and walls of Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal. A collection of musical instruments, palanquins, royal costumes, furniture and the cannons on the fort's ramparts are well preserved. Another attraction in Jodhpur is Jaswant Thada . This 19th century royal cenotaph built in white marble in commemoration of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II and three other cenotaphs, stand nearby. The cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh holds the rare portraits of the rulers and Maharajas of Jodhpur. |

The romantic looking Umaid Bhawan Palace was actually built with the purpose of giving employment to the people of Jodhpur during a long drawn famine. The royal family of Jodhpur still lives in a part of the palace. Another part of the palace houses a well-maintained museum, displaying an amazing array of items belonging to the Maharaja and the royal family - weapons, antiques & fascinating clocks, crockery and trophies. Visit Mandore (8 kms from the main city) Jodhpur)- the ancient capital of Marwar, The main attraction includes The Hall of Heroes. Sixteen gigantic figures carved out of a single rock depicting popular Hindu and folk deities stand there in bright colours and are well maintained. But one can not miss the caves in crags and the sprawling gardens, which are now shelter place for monkeys and peacocks..

The Meherangarh Fort-
This fort overlooks the city of Jodhpur. Meherangarh means majestic, and the
fort reflects this character in full as it perches on a perpendicular
cliff.
The museum in the fort has some of the unique
collections of palanquins, elephants howdahs, miniature paintings of various
schools, folk music instruments, costumes, furniture and armoury of bygone days.

The Umaid Bhawan palace- Facing the fort is the Umaid
Bhawan, a
sprawling palace built by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1929-42. t is popularly known
as 'Chittar Palace' because of the particular kind of sandstone used to build
it.
While most of the
palace has been converted into a hotel, there is still a part which brings back
to mind the royal age that went by with independence of India.

Jaswant Thada- The royal crematorium, a white
marble memorial built in 1899 A.D. The cenotaph has portraits of rulers of that
era. The fort has within it several palaces which reflect in their ornate
courtyards, balconies, walls, ceilings and arches and lattice work (in
sandstone), the finest stone craftsmanship that this region is known for. Among
the places to be seen in the palaces are the Moti Mahal(the palaces of pearls),
the phool mahal (flower palace) and Man Mahal (palace of honour), besides the
Sileh Khana which houses the armoury. |
