This was the worlds ancient residential university founded in the 5th
century BC The University continued to be a great seat of learning until the
12th century.
It is said that up to 2000 teachers and 10,000 students lived in
this residential university. Excavations at the site reveal stupas, dormitories,
lecture halls, and images of the Buddha.

Ancient Jain and Buddhist texts reveal
that both Buddha and Mahavira spent some time in Nalanda. While in Nalanda
besides the Nalanda University Archaeological Complex you can also visit the
Nalanda Archaeological Museum who has rare manuscripts and a collection of
magnificent statues of the Maurya, Gupta and Pala periods dating back to the 5th
and 6th century BC, besides those of Buddha in his various aspects. |
