This was the world’s ancient residential university founded in the 5th century BC The University continued to be a great seat of learning until the 12th century.

It is said that up to 2000 teachers and 10,000 students lived in this residential university. Excavations at the site reveal stupas, dormitories, lecture halls, and images of the Buddha.

While in Nalanda besides the Nalanda University Archaeological Complex you can also visit the Nalanda Archaeological Museum who has rare manuscripts and a collection of magnificent statues of the Maurya, Gupta and Pala periods dating back to the 5th and 6th century BC, besides those of Buddha in his various aspects.
