In India a craft runs into the craftsman‘s family like a genetic character, each generation adds its own features while maintaining the originality. Skills have developed with time but the components remain natural. 

The best places to find the charming creations of Indian handicrafts are the state emporiums, various fairs and exhibitions organized by the Government, and other associate bodies.

THE INDIAN LOOMS : Indian fabric industry spins the finest of cotton, silk and woolens. The creative fingers of the Indian weavers are acclaimed around the world. 

    The prime centres for silk production are at Varanasi, Patna, Murshidabad, Surat and Mysore. 

    For colourful cottons, the best source is Rajasthan. 

    Kashmir is famous for its beautiful woolens, its intricate woven carpets, skillfully embroidered shawls, and above all for its pashmina.

JEWELS OF TRADITION : Certainly precious jewellery is something to be possessive about, something worth owning. For an Indian lady, the art of looking beautiful starts with jewellery.
   

    The common jewellery items are Bangles (worn in arms like bracelets), Rings, Necklaces, Earrings, Armlets, Kardhanis (worn around the waist), Payals (anklets), Bichiyas ( worn on toes) and Naths (nosepin) 

    The colourful, ethnic Kundan jewellery from Rajasthan looks gorgeous. 

    The silver jewellery from Orissa is known and valued for its intricate workmanship. 

    Apart from diamonds, other precious stones found in India are Lapis, Lazuli, Indian star, Rubies, Moonstones, Aquamarine and pearls. In India, Hyderabad is a leading center for pearls.

HANDICRAFTS :

    Bronze Mirror Craft : This art is preserved by a family of craftsmen from Kerala. They make mirror out of bronze.

    Embroidery : The unique Applique crafts from Orissa, Mirror embroidery from Rajasthan, Banni embroidery from Gujrat are very colorful and require skillful needle work.

    Woodwork : Sandal wood carving is very famous in Karnataka. The fragrance and the workmanship on the articles make them a collector’s choice.

    Stone craft : This is mainly found in Agra. Fascinating marble inlay work, and the colourful decoration on marble bring back the beauty of Mughal art.

    Perfumes : Indian Itra (perfume) is usually made from flower extracts. Each Indian perfume is named after the flower from which it is derived Itra from Kannauj, in Uttar Pradesh and Sandal wood perfume from Mysore are very famous.

    Terra-cotta : The beautiful Terra-cotta articles come from Uttar Pradesh In Gorakhpur, Guberia bazar is a market cum home for hundreds of craftsmen. 

In order to get fine Terra cota, clay is conditioned and then moulded into beautiful traditional articles. 

Terracota initially was a tribal art form. Even today, the tribals of Bastar in Madhya Pradesh produce age old designs.

Official government outlets are situated on Janpath (Central Cottage industries Emporium) and Baba Kharak Singh Marg (State Government Emporia).

Shopping hours 10am  to 7pm for Govt. Emporia with lunch break of 1 hour between 1pm to 3pm.
