There's arguably more to see here in Rome than in any other
city in the world. The mosiacs of earlier christian churches,

museums signify Rome's status as the headquarters of the
Catholic church. The city center is divided into distinct
blocks. Most of the city is easily accessible on foot though
you may need to hop on a bus for the more scattered sights
such as the catacombs.

Basilica
di San pietro (St.Peter's Basilica) :
This is the largest cathedral in the world. This Basilica
was built over the site of St.Peter's grave, according
to popular belief. Unforgettable sights are Michaelango's
dome, almost 152 meters (500 feet) high, which can
be scaled. There is an elevator to the base of the
dome and a stairway to the top. People can also take
the stairs all the way if they dare. St.Peter's is
open 7 am - 6 pm (7 pm in summer). Visits to the dome
and its views (partially by elevator, the steps) are
permitted from 11 am - 4:45 pm (6:15 pm in summer).
Colosseo
(Colosseum) :
This monumental brick vaulted building is intensely
Roman in design, but covered with a Greek veneer of
different capital orders on its three tiers of arcades.
The many arches formed the entrances to the arena,
each numbered so that the 50,000 spectators could
easily find their seats, considered a marvel of the
time. This Colosseum is open daily and admission to
the arena is free, but there is a fee to climb to
second tier from West entrance. Only from January
16 to February 15 there is a seasonal closing.
Forum :
Forum is the commercial, political and religious center
of ancient Rome. It was constructed over about 900
years. Just some of the many must sees include the
Arch of Septimus Severus, the Temple of Saturn, the
House of the Vestals, the Temple of Antoninus & Faustina
and the Arch of Titus. From the Forum you can climb
Palatine-where the wealthy and powerful built their
palaces and personal temples.
Capitoline
Hill :
Michelangelo's Piazza del Campidoglio is the star
attraction here. Designed in 1538, the piazza is a
classic of Renaissance town planning. It's bordered
by three palaces- the Palazzo dei Conservatori, the
Palazzo dei Senatori and the Palazzo Nuovo and formerly
featured a bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius. The Conservatori
and Nuovo now house the Museo Capitolino, just burstling
with classic statues. The Capitoline overlooks the
Forum, and it was from here that ancient Rome was
governed.
Trevi
Fountain :
One of the most popular places to hang out is not
a piazza but a fountain- the Trevi Fountain. It attracts
more tourist coins than any other fountain in Rome,
due to the clever rumour that a thrown coin will ensure
your return to the Eternal City.
Castel
Sant' Angelo :
Reached by one of the world's most beautiful bridges-Bernini's
billowing, is Pont Sant' Angelo-this circular tank
of a building was originally constructed as the mausoleum
of Emperor Hadrian. It was converted into a papal
fortress in the 6th century and is linked by underground
passages to the Vatican palaces. The mausoleum is
now an interesting museum and its evocative atmosphere
is heightened by the knowledge that it was from here
that Puccini's Tosca plunged to her death.
The
Holy See :
The Holy See or Vatican is in the heart of Rome. It
is the administrative and spiritual capital of Roman
Catholicism.
Papal
audiences are held once a week on Wednesdays when
the pope is in Rome. To attend you'll need to get
a ticket beforehand. You'll need to apply in person
on Monday or Tuesday before the audience, you wish
to attend. Tickets are free but arrive at St.Peters

group in several languages and gives his blessings.
